Question: I’m a keen cook and I really like the idea of having an induction hob in my new kitchen but my husband is sceptical. How can I prove him wrong?

Answer: As a keen cook, you’re right to be thinking about an induction hob for your new kitchen. Not only do induction hobs look great, they provide an extremely fast and efficient method of cooking with a degree of control over the heat that is comparable to that found on gas hobs. This means is that not only does the hob heat up extremely quickly, but the heat can also be lowered instantly without the long delay associated with ceramic hobs.

But your husband is not alone in being sceptical – most consumers remain unsure as to what induction is and how it works, and of course the relatively high price of induction appliances means they are often beyond reach for many people. There’s also many misconceptions about what sort of pans can be used on an induction hob, and this confusion puts people off.

So how does induction work? In simple terms, induction hobs work by creating a magnetic field below the ceramic surface of the hob. When an iron pan or a pan made using an iron-based alloy (i.e. any pan that is magnetic) is placed onto the ring, heat is drawn up to it and the contents can be heated so quickly that it can boil water faster than a kettle. It is also so accurate that it is possible to create a constant low temperature for long periods of time, so sauces can simmer away without the likelihood of them sticking to the bottom of the pan. As the hob will only function when a suitable pan is placed on it and not at the touch of other objects, such as hands for example, another beauty of this technology is its safety.

If you want to try induction cooking without stretching to a complete new hob, then Belling has come up with the perfect solution. The new Baby Belling Pronto is a table top induction hob that simply plugs into any socket to provide a single induction element and at just £89.99 it represents a fabulous low cost and portable way of testing the technology without committing to a whole new built-in hob. It even comes complete with a suitable glass lidded pan and cast-iron griddle, meaning you don’t have to worry about not having the right cookware. And of course the Pronto will continue to be useful in the kitchen long after your new kitchen has been fitted.
